No matter what shape or size your curls are we all have one thing in common, frizz. For some, fighting against frizz is an everyday battle, so it's good to know what you're dealing with. Do you know what frizz is? Do you know the cause of it? Understanding this is the key to getting rid of unwanted frizz.

What is "frizz"

Frizz is hair that doesn't line up with the surrounding hair strands by forming a tangle or an independent curl. Some people like to "frizz" their hair by teasing it causing the hair strands to tangle.

What causes frizz

The main cause of frizz is lack of moisture and dryness. The underlying cause is usually the same: an elevated layer of cuticles. As a result, instead of laying flat the hair appears to look dry and frizzy. However, when the cuticle layer stays flat the hair looks smooth.

Curly hair is more susceptible to frizz than straight hair due to dehydration. Overall, curly hair is drier than straight hair. It also has to do with the way you style curly hair. You have to be cautious NOT to brush through your hair when dry. If you do, it encourages the cuticle layer to rise, resulting in frizz.

Types of frizz

  • Halo frizz is only at the crown of your head, no where else.

  • Surface frizz only appears on the outside layer of your hair.

  • In-the-curl frizz works its way through the curl killing the look of smooth curls.

Here are some tips on how to avoid frizz at all cost!

Nearly any hair care product you pick up these days will claim to "combat frizz." Sadly, too many of them are just gimmick advertisement claims for items filled with ingredients that we should avoid. You can try to be proactive in avoiding frizz, instead of investing money in useless products!

Tips on avoiding frizz

1. Get a good hair cut- It is important to get your curls cut by someone who is an expert at styling curly hair. A bad haircut can cause major frizz trust me!

2. Ditch the 'poo!- Limit your shampoo use to only a couple of times a week or switch to a mild cleanser. That will help your curls lock in more moisture and help prevent dryness.

3. Choose wisely!- Make sure you are only using products that are right for your curly hair type. I know it can be challenging to find the perfect curly cocktail for your hair but hang in there! Natural hair is a trial and error experience that we all go through.

4. Check the weather- This seems like a no brainer but it is key to check the humidity for the day so you know how your curls will react. If it's raining with 80% humidity, you should push wash day to tomorrow.
