On February 12th, I had the opportunity to be a curly hair model for a Tresemme segment on Telemundo and People En Español. Never in a million years did I see myself being a model of any kind but when the opportunity fell in my lap I had to take it! I’m an advocate for all natural curls and being able to showcase that to viewers is next level.
A family friend of mine reached out to me through Instagram asking if I would be interested. All of the shoots were in NYC for the day starting at 8AM. Since I live at my college, I had to commute back to north jersey and travel to NYC the morning of. It seems like a lot of traveling but I was more than happy to accept the gig! The morning of, I met PR Specialist Laura Mejia and Tresemme Hair Stylist Marco Pena at their hotel for glam. First order of business was my hair! He decided to do a side twist with two pearl clips. Since I came with my hair curly he enhanced a few with a tiny curling iron. I wasn’t a big fan of putting heat on my hair but he made sure he was extra careful.

Our first stop was Telemundo, and I was nervous the whole ride there to say the least! However, Laura and Marco were able to calm my nerves with their witty jokes. Once we arrived, we had 10 minutes to settle in and put finishing touches on my look. As soon as I put my stuff down, my nerves subsided and I was ready to have fun! I just reminded myself that this is supposed to be fun, not stressful. Shortly after, a man came into our room and told us to follow him. He led us to the production stage where they had a chair and a table ready for us to lay out all of the tools and products being used. The host of the show greeted us with a warm welcome and reminded me to look at the camera and smile. The segment was live 2-3 minutes long and I can honestly say smiling is not as easy as it looks hahaha. I was just happy that everything went smoothly.

We then went to People en Español which works in the same facility as People magazine. We were led into the dressing room where we waited to be called. I couldn’t help but notice all of the Communications Professionals and how diverse their staff was. Everyone looked like they were in their 20s and early 30s. It is crazy to think that I am going to school to be in their shoes one day. I was able to talk to the production crew to get a little insight on their jobs. They really enjoy working for People and encouraged me to keep working hard in school. Their warm advice definitely helped me keep a smile on my face for the second segment. When we were ready to shoot, they had the same set up as Telemundo with a table and chair waiting for us. I felt somewhat more confident during this segment since I was familiar with my queues.

At the end of the day, I thanked Laura and Marcos for choosing me to be their hair model. Never in a million years would I have thought I would be modeling MY curly hair. It was a breakthrough moment not only for me but for curly girls in the hispanic community. Curly hair is finally seen as stylish and trendy instead of messy and unprofessional. I’m happy I was able to showcase my curls for the world to see. I am forever grateful for such an amazing opportunity.
