If you have been keeping up-to-date on the latest trends and techniques in the natural hair community, chances are you've heard of this iconic hair growth recipe: rice water. Rice water contains a lot of amino acids and vitamins like vitamin E and magnesium that makes your hair super shiny and strong. It is known for make your hair grow rapidly. An ancient hair and skin formula that originated in Southeast Asia has been used for hundreds of years. There is not much scientific research on the benefits of rice water. However, people in the curly hair community have been raving about it seeing a significant change in their hair growth in a very short amount of time. Any hair type can use rice water if you're trying to grow your hair out or simple for healthy hair purposes.
There are different ways to make rice water but I am going to share with you my way of making it. I like to make fermented rice water which sits for 24 hours before using. The pH level in plain rice water is higher than the pH level in your hair. The pH level in fermented rice water is closer to the pH level in your hair. This is better because it will help seal the cuticles and make it a lot more shiny with less frizz. I've watched countless YouTube videos on how to make rice water and found that the fermented recipe is the most effective for me. If you find other ways of making it feel free to try it out!
Things you will need:
Rice
Water
Colander
Tablespoon
Small bowl
Mason jar or container
Lavender oil (optional)
How to make:
Take 2 tablespoons of rice and put it in a colander and rinse thoroughly. I do this to clean the rice because you never know what dust or chemicals can be sitting on the surface. Once you drain the rice, transfer it into a small bowl. Here you will take 2 cups of water and add it to the rice. To remember the measurements I just think tablespoons=rice and cups=water. So in the future if you want to double your recipe lets say 4 tablespoons of rice with 4 cups of water is the ratio you want to have. Mix the water with the rice until you see the water start to cloud up and look milky. You then transfer whats in the bowl into a mason jar or in a container. Let the jar sit for 24 hours before using so the rice can ferment. When you're ready to use, drain the liquid in the colander to remove the rice. Now you are ready to use your rice water!
Directions for use:
I like to replace my conditioner for rice water, here is how you can do that
Wash hair regularly with shampoo
Rinse thoroughly
Pour rice water all over hair
Massage the rice water into scalp
Leave on for about 20 minutes
Rinse hair thoroughly with cool water
Like I mentioned before, this is the way I use rice water. Some people like to use it as a leave in till the next wash day or spray it in their scalp. Do whatever makes you feel comfortable. I hope this recipe works for you!
